Abstract:
The accusation of host desecration by Jews in Paris in 1290 was one of the earliest and most widespread in the late Middle Ages. Analyzes various literary sources, such as liturgical texts, chronicles, and theological treatises, in order to find the legend's oldest version. Discusses, as well, archival sources. The analysis led to events which took place in the reign of Philippe IV (1285-1314); hypothesizes that the basis of the accusation lay in differences which arose concerning a financial transaction between a Jew and a Christian. Excerpts of some archival and literary sources are appended.
