Abstract: An explication of why the rabbis in the early Talmudic period included "The Song of Songs" in the biblical canon. States that there was a need at the time to express the bond of love between God and Israel, and this erotic book, interpreted allegorically, fulfilled that need. Discusses, also, the conception of God as the husband or lover of the people of Israel, His wife or bride, which appears in other books of the Bible (e.g. Hosea, Isaiah) and which is a totally Jewish conception.
