Kurzfassung: The law of 1936 on the limitation of ritual slaughter (shehitah) in Poland, and its subsequent proposed amendments in 1938, were motivated by a number of considerations - humane, economic, and political. Its principal motive was a desire to eliminate Jews from the process of producing and selling meat, in order to advance the Polish middle class economically. In the USA, and particularly among American Jews, the attempt to ban shehitah was seen as a sign of growing antisemitism in Poland. The Federation of Polish Jews in America sent a memorandum of protest to the Polish government, and the American Jewish Committee expressed its concern over the bill to the Polish ambassador. In response, Polish authorities claimed that the bill was motivated by purely humane and economic considerations. The view of the two U.S. ambassadors in Warsaw, first John Cudahy and then Anthony J. Drexel Biddle Jr., was similar to that of the Federation and the AJC, that the bill attested to growing antisemitism in Poland; however, they also admitted economic motives behind the bill, e.g. a desire to lower the prices of meat, and military motives. Biddle also pointed out other anti-Jewish bills that were passed by the Polish Parliament.
