Abstract:
An English version of a lecture delivered in Hebrew at the Tenth World Congress of Jewish Studies, Jerusalem, 1989. Examines the Shoah in present-day consciousness, among Jews and in more general terms as well. States that in the public domain, whilst the representation of the Shoah is more widespread than ever, it is not crystallizing in the historical consciousness of victims or in general public discourse into some monumental and mythical narrative. Both in the Israeli and Jewish public memory of the Holocaust, the formation of a Public Myth has failed to appear. Points out that despite the progress of historical research, there are limits to the historical interpretation of the Holocaust - i.e. the place of the Final Solution in historical continuity. Notes difficulties in literary and artistic representations of the Holocaust.
