Abstract:
Discusses how the Jewish "moguls" of Hollywood oversaw the virtual elimination of Jews and Jewish concerns from films made in the U.S. and other parts of the world during the Nazi period, thus losing an opportunity to affect both American and international public opinion in regard to helping the Jews. The moguls were extreme assimilationists, afraid of identifying as Jews or of being accused of defending Jewish as opposed to American values. Jewish Hollywood feared American anti-Jewish prejudices, e.g. the contention that the Jews controlled Hollywood and could use their influence to involve the U.S. in war. Newsreels, as well as feature films, were made "judenrein". However, argues that the blame for de-Judaizing or universalizing antisemitism also falls on some of the contemporary American Jewish organizations.
