Abstract: This publication offers a catalogue of the extant synagogues in Lithuania: 96 buildings in 59 cities and towns, among them 17 synagogues built of wood. Until World War II there were about 1,000 Jewish prayer houses in Lithuania, while today only 10% exist, many abandoned and in different state of deterioration. Only three synagogues are active. The catalogue consists of 59 geographical entries. Each entry includes a short overview of the history of the Jewish community in the town where a synagogue is preserved, comprehensive information about the vanished synagogues in that town and a detailed description of the extant synagogue building or buildings. The entries are richly illustrated with archival historical photographs and architectural designs of the synagogues, and recent documentation of the extant buildings with measured architectural drawings. The catalogue has two introductory articles: "Synagogues in Lithuania: A Historical Overview" by Dr. Vladimir Levin and "Synagogue Architecture in Lithuania" by Dr. Sergey Kravtsov.

Abstract: Is there such a thing as Jewish Architecture? - Scholars, scientists, and researchers from all over the world gathered in Braunschweig to answer just this question. The problem of a specific Jewish character in works of art and architecture has been a point of growing interest during the last decades. Case studies, regional surveys, and essays contained in this volume offer an insight into the variety of Europe̷s architectural and urban structures that could be considered Jewish by origin. With the help of this architectural heritage, Jewish presence in Europe can be detected all the way back to early Jewish settlements in the Mediterranean region. From this time on, sacred and secular Jewish buildings are interwoven into the pattern of their Christian and Muslim surroundings. A straight line can be drawn connecting the medieval and early-modern shul with the magnificent synagogues of the ̮Golden AgeŁ and the large community centers built in the Neues Bauen style. After the hiatus caused by the Shoah, newly expanding Jewish communities find expression in new architectural forms which are also reflected in the architecture of present-day Jewish museums. Mit Beiträgen von Zoya Arshavsky, Eleonora Bergman, Sonja Beyer, Maroš Borský, Ralf Busch, Hans-Christoph Dittscheid, Miguel Angel Espinosa Villegas, Daniela Gauding, Samuel Gruber, Hans-Christof Haas, Isabel Haupt, Elko Hazan, Ingolf Herbarth, Dominique Jarrassé, Sharman Kadish, Katrin Keßler, Rudolf Klein, Jaroslav Klenovsky, Ulrich Knufinke, Sergey Kravtsov, Carol H.
