Abstract: The two political entities Israel and Judah were in conflict more often than not. Both claimed to be true heirs to the leadership role in Land of Israel. The Old Testament in its final form reflects a Judean point of view and in many instances obscures the claims of the Northern Kingdom. The claims on both sides, inter alia, found expression in the expectation of messianic figures. Traditions about Joseph played a major role in the legitimation of Northern claims. In the process, he became a messianic figure. The 'Son of Joseph' was expected as one of the most important eschatological figures. This sheds new light on the expression 'Son of Joseph' in Luke 4:22.
