Abstract:
In the early 12th century the Benedictine monk Guibert of Nogent, who had not been an eyewitness to the First Crusade, wrote the chronicle "Dei gesta per Francos". This work was a close copy of the earlier "Gesta Francorum", composed by a Crusade participant, but with some significant changes. Discusses Guibert's anti-Jewish rhetoric, specifically his denigration of the Maccabees, to whom other chroniclers compared the Crusaders. Guibert insisted on physical aspects of the Jewish warriors' victory in order to emphasize spiritual aspects of the contemporary Christian warriors, even when that meant distorting Jewish history and theology.
