Abstract:
Surveys a complex of problems related to the attitude of Nietzsche towards Jews and Judaism, stressing the importance of studying the case of Nietzsche in historical context, including the development of modern antisemitism at the end of the 19th century. Discusses political and cultural antisemitism of the period and quotes from Nietzsche's letters which prove that he shared, partially, society's antisemitic sentiments because he grew up in that kind of atmosphere. Explains his manifestations of antisemitism as part of his assault on Christian ethics, narrow nationalism, and redemptive socialism. Deals, as well, with his irritation with the use of his writings by antisemitic circles, and explains why Nietzsche's writings could be misconstrued as antisemitic.
