Abstract:
Discusses Zweig's "Bilanz der deutschen Judenheit, " written in reaction to the crisis of German Jewry caused by Nazi ascendance to power. Zweig had already published articles on antisemitism in 1920-21 in "Der Jude." In the first part of his book, Zweig analyzes Nazi antisemitism in Freudian terms, as a mass psychosis. In the second part, he notes Jewish contributions to culture, science, and the economy, justifying Jewish national pride in these accomplishments as self-defense against the Nazis who denied them. The final part seeks a solution to the precariousness of Jewish existence, not only in Germany but everywhere in the Diaspora; he sees this solution in Zionism and, ultimately, in international socialism.
