Abstract:
A German sailor, who arrived with his ship to the port of Libau (Liepāja, Latvia) in June 1941, was an eyewitness to the mass executions of Jews by the Einsatzgruppen. He summarized these events in his diary, which was confiscated by his superiors when the sailor was accused of theft. However, the diary remained in the court's file, from where it was recently extracted and published. Gives details about the victims, the German soldiers charged with the executions, and the numerous bystanders who seemed to enjoy the spectacle.
