Abstract:
The "historians' debate" is evidence that the Holocaust is still a burning problem in German historiography. The Bitburg Affair was an attempt to show that World War II was not different from World War I. Criticizes the effort made in Germany to "understand" Auschwitz and the extermination of the Jews, which results in embarrassment or apologetics. States that Auschwitz cannot be "historicized", and no consensus in this controversy is to be expected.
