Abstract:
Argues that Christopher Columbus's voyages of discovery and the expulsion of the Jews of Spain were expressions of Spanish Catholic millennial ideology and reflected the influence of the 12th-century Italian monk Joachim of Fiore. Joachim taught that the Third Age would be inaugurated by the subjugation of the Church, the liberation and rebuilding of Jerusalem, and the conversion of the Jews.

The place of the Holy Land and the Jews' expulsion from Spain in Columbus's millennialism.
