Abstract:
Discusses "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" in terms of a conspiratorial worldview and a persistence of paranoia, as demonstrated by the continued popularity of the "Protocols" after it was conclusively revealed to be a forgery. Analyzes two modernist works, Eco's novel "Foucault's Pendulum" (1988) and Kiš's short story "The Book of Kings and Fools" (1983), that explore the delights and dangers of paranoiac thinking in literature and in life. The "Protocols" is an example of this phenomenon in literature that has had and continues to have a lethal influence on life.
