Abstract:
Demonstrates the important influence of literature and art on anti-Jewish persecution during the late Middle Ages, focusing on the opposing symbols of the Church and the Synagogue in disputations, plays, and sculpture. Compares the text of the "Frankfurter Dirigierrolle" (1350) with the "Alsfelder passion play" (1510), showing that increased hatred towards the Jews in the 16th century is expressed in the humiliation of the Synagogue. This debate, originally intended by the Church to persuade Jews to convert, became a source of incitement to pogroms (already spreading in the wake of the Black Death) and of new negative stereotypes. A 15th century playwright, Hans Folz, made aggressive use of this motif in his plays, including an appeal for the Jews' extermination. Folz's religious hostility and accusations of Jewish economic exploitation led to physical attacks and contributed to the expulsion of the Jews from Nuremberg in 1499.
