Abstract:
Analyzes Reich's composition for string quartet and tape, "Different Trains, " which attempts to encompass the experiences of Holocaust survivors. Recorded speech is used to vocalize the survivors' words and express their suffering, and the sense of urgency and fear is evoked through the sound of trains and sirens. Reich addresses fundamental questions posed by the Holocaust in his work, such as the ability of both oppressed and oppressor to enjoy the same music, thus indicating that those who carried out the Final Solution were ordinary men and women.
