Abstract:
Contends that anthropology has neglected the study of the Nazi genocide, aside from psychological anthropology which overemphasized national stereotyping. Suggests that anthropology should approach the "culture of terror" by concentrating on its own unique perspectives on social systems and cultural frameworks, and by deemphasizing the uniqueness of the Holocaust which would result in more theorizing about genocide and pre-genocidal conditions. Contends that although the postmodernist perspective on the hermeneutics of the text is useful in part, its relativism and lack of historical credence granted to testimonies must be overcome in the study of any genocide (where testimonies are an important source).
