Abstract:
Presents details about the three roundups in late August 1942 that resulted in the liquidation of the Jews of Kielce. After discussing the Nazi preparations, including the troops and officers involved, provides details of the roundups. Notes that 19,500 Jews were deported to Treblinka and 2,500 Jews were murdered on location, apparently because there was not enough room on the trains. Compares the more than 10% who were murdered on the spot to the 9% in Międzyrzec who suffered the same fate, according to Christopher Browning in his "Ordinary Men". Therefore, Browning's description of the deeds of Police Batallion 101 as "indescribable brutality" no longer appears to be the most extreme case. Concludes that the Kielce killings illustrate the particularly violent, sadistic, and pitiless deeds of the Germans and their accomplices.
