Abstract:
Despite their small numbers (only 553 in 1774), Swiss Jews suffered from discriminatory legislation though restrictions were eased during the Emancipation (1797-98) after much public debate. Mentions Johann Rudolf Suter who fought for Jewish rights but also expressed antisemitic prejudices. Pogroms took place in 1802, and discrimination continued (e.g. Jews were not allowed to vote) until 1848 when equal rights were granted to all citizens.
