Abstract:
Discusses views on human autonomy (freedom of action) as explicated by Plato (on Socrates), Maimonides, and Kant. Then goes on to discuss acceptance of Jewish law or non-acceptance, often seen as a question of reason vs. revelation, individual choice vs. religious commandment, autonomy vs. heteronomy. Concludes that there is a place for autonomy in Judaism, in that God does not just command but forms a partnership with humans requiring the consent of both parties.
