Abstract:
An examination of 900 folk narratives told by Polish Jews (recorded and preserved in the Israeli Folk Archives, Haifa) shows that in 51% the relations involved confrontation with the Gentile, mainly against the background of religion - disputations, blood libels, debates in which the king was arbiter. The narratives also describe socioeconomic and sexual confrontations. Gives examples of each to show the attitudes of the Jews towards the Gentile majority and how the Jews defended themselves in a Gentile environment.
