Abstract:
Describes two 15th-century Italian prints depicting the ritual murder of Simon of Trent and of Sebastiano Novello of Portobuffolè. Relates the story of the Trent blood libel, the trial, the canonization of Simon, and his cult which was abolished by the Vatican in 1965. Notes typical features of the engraving: stereotypical portrayal of the Jews, the Jewish badge decorated with the emblem of a pig, the bowl to collect Simon's blood. This was one of many 15th-century representations of the subject. In the Portobuffole print, Sebastian is shown in a posture resembling the crucified Christ. Several descriptions of the murder of Simon also associate him with Christ, and thus implicitly with Jewish guilt for his crucifixion.
