Abstract:
Focuses on one case out of hundreds of such cases found in the records of the People’s Tribunals established after World War II. In May 1946, a four-year-old girl was reported missing from her home in Budapest. Among the occupants of the apartment building, a rumor circulated that a Jew had abducted her for ritual purposes. A man was beaten up and the neighbors attempted to lynch him. When an ambulance was called, the rioters broke the window and tried to stop it from evacuating the wounded man to the hospital. The police arrived to restore order. Describes the life and background of "H.", the building’s superintendent, a former member of the Arrow Cross, who was the instigator of the event. He and three others were tried in court, but witnesses were afraid to speak out against them and they were released from custody. The charges against them were dropped in 1949. Discusses statements made in the court documents, and relates the details of this case as an example of the antisemitism prevalent in postwar Hungary.
