Abstract:
Discusses the Don Pacifico Affair, which began when the home of the Portuguese-British Jewish merchant David Pacifico in Athens was broken into on Easter of 1847. His home was severely damaged, members of his family were injured, and much of his property was stolen. Funds which belonged to the Jewish community, which he held as a community leader, were also stolen. Notes that the attack on Pacifico was due to the fact that the Greek Orthodox Church in Athens had prohibited the burning of Judas in effigy on Easter and local Christians believed that Pacifico was behind the prohibition, as well as the fact that antisemitic attacks were common before and during Easter in mid-19th century Athens. Since some of Pacifico's attackers were sons of Greek leaders, Greek authorities were reluctant to deal with the case. Pacifico, therefore, as a native of Gibraltar, appealed to British authorities to help him obtain justice. Although the British authorities were ultimately unable to help him, there was a major confrontation between Britain and Greece due to the incident.
