Abstract:
Traces Japan's ambivalent attitude to the Jews. Ironically, aid to Japan by a group of Jewish financiers in the Russo-Japanese War reinforced White Russian and, later, Nazi propaganda of a Jewish world conspiracy which could benefit but also ruin Japan. Hoping to profit from the Jews, Japanese occupation authorities protected Jews in Manchuria against their White Russian enemies. During the Holocaust, Japan, despite German pressure, allowed Jewish refugees to enter its territories and settle in Japanese-occupied Shanghai. But increasingly, antisemitic writers such as Masami Uno are again propagating the Jewish conspiracy myth, and tensions between Japan and the U.S. are being blamed on the influence of the Jews.
