Abstract: In Providence in January 1905, a scheduled Yiddish lecture on Religion and Socialism was first opposed, and then allowed to take place and was monitored by the Providence police. The guest lecturer was Benjamin Feigenbaum, a Jewish propagandist and publicist, former general secretary of the Workmen's Circle, and editor of the socialist literary journal "Zukunft". Stories involving Jews appeared in Providence's press during that month, showing little sympathy for the Jewish participants (who were identifying with their revolutionary compatriots in Russia). Some of the press protested against the "undesired immigration" of Jews. However, this incident died down and did not cause a ruckus as had been expected by the Providence police force.
