Abstract: Based on examination of Holocaust diaries, studies the responses of Jews interned in ghettos and camps, in Poland and Lithuania, to the Warsaw ghetto uprising in 1943. Many Jews heard about the uprising in general, without details, through Polish radio broadcasts from London. Most residents of other ghettos focused mainly on the catastrophic destruction of the ghetto, since they feared that this would also be their own fate. However, members of resistance groups and prisoners in Nazi camps focused on the phenomenon of Jewish resistance, which gave them a sense of pride.

Abstract: Reactions of Agudath Israel leaders in Israel to the Warsaw ghetto uprising ranged from praise by Benjamin Mintz to criticism by Rabbi Moshe Blau, who considered it a suicidal act. Since a majority in the party supported Blau's view and exalted spiritual over physical resistance, the party chose to ignore the fact that members of Agudath Israel in Warsaw took part in the uprising. Focuses on the case of Rabbi Menahem Ziembe, who issued a halakhic ruling in favor of resistance, took part in the fighting, and was killed. Agudath Israel denies his role in the uprising, as well as that of other members of the party in Warsaw.

Abstract: The Catholic and Protestant Churches supported the Vichy regime in the hope that all religious activities would be allowed to continue. The attitude of Cardinal Pierre-Marie Gerlier was ambivalent: he deplored the treatment of Jewish inmates at internment camps, but was a staunch supporter of Pétain. In 1940-41 there were many individuals among the Catholic and Protestant clergy who protested against the anti-Jewish statutes; e.g. Pastor Marc Boegner openly defended the Jews. The Catholic Abbé Alexandre Glasberg, originally from a Ukrainian Jewish family, helped many Jews, supplying them with false papers and hiding places; he acted with the consent of Gerlier. After deportations began in spring 1942, there was greater participation in rescue work: many monasteries and convents hid Jews, the organization Amitié Chrétienne helped Jews escape to other countries, and Gerlier was involved in saving 84 Jewish children from deportation. Some priests and nuns were arrested for their rescue work and some perished in Nazi camps.

Abstract: Deals with the relief and rescue activities conducted by Klipper, a Jewish businessman from Vatra Dornei, Romania, on behalf of Romanian Jews deported to the camps of Transnistria, Jews in the Czernowitz ghetto, Jewish refugees from Poland who escaped to Romania, and in general for refugees from territories occupied by Romanian forces. Klipper saved himself and his family from deportation to Transnistria by escaping from Vatra Dornei to Bucharest in October 1941, aided by officers of the Wehrmacht and the Romanian Army who also helped him in his various relief activities. Klipper initiated vast relief activities, and also helped Jewish communal and Zionist organizations, including youth movements, to carry out clandestine as well as authorized relief and rescue activities, mainly for the deportees in Transnistria. After the war Klipper testified against Romanians charged with war crimes, who were tried by the People's Courts in Romania. In 1950 he was arrested by the communist authorities and died in prison in the same year. His family emigrated to Israel in 1959-60.

Abstract: Describes the rescue activities organized by members of the Jewish community of Turda, Romania, and by Zionist youth movement activists after the annexation of northern Transylvania to Hungary in August 1940. Focuses on the activities conducted by Arnold (Aharon) David Finkelstein - one of the leaders of the Jewish community of Turda, by Aryeh Hirsch - a member of the Habonim youth movement, and by Moshe Moscovitz - the son of the head of the Jewish community of Turda. Discusses, also, the collaboration of local Romanian officials in the smuggling of Hungarian, Polish, and Slovak Jewish refugees from Hungary into Romania, and their transfer to safe places in the vicinity of Bucharest, mainly after the Nazi occupation of Hungary in March 1944.

Abstract: A lecture presented at a study day held at Yad Vashem in 2002. Discusses the leadership and functioning of the Slovakian Working Group, which was set up in early 1942 by several members of the Bratislava Jewish Council who opposed cooperation with the Nazis. The group members first attempted to cancel deportations in February 1942, but their pleas to government and Church authorities failed; thereafter, they concentrated on helping individuals. Describes the activities of Gisi Fleischmann and Rabbi Michael Dov Weissmandel. In summer 1942 they managed to bribe the Nazis, through Dieter Wisliceny, to temporarily stop the deportations. They then attempted to stop deportations throughout Europe with the Europa Plan, which failed to materialize. After the Slovak uprising of 1944 most of the Working Group members were deported to the Sereď labor camp. Fleischmann perished there; Weissmandel jumped from a train headed for Auschwitz and survived.

Abstract: Describes the rescue activities of Walter Susskind, a Jew who was born in 1906 in Germany and in 1938 moved with his wife to the Netherlands, where their daughter was living. In 1941 he was appointed by the Jewish Council to represent the Jews to the German authorities at the Hollandse Schouwburg in Amsterdam, where thousands of Jews were interned prior to deportation to Westerbork. Susskind helped hundreds of Jews, especially children, to escape in various ways, and also managed to remove their names from the deportation lists. For this purpose, Susskind befriended the SS guards and their commander, Ferdinand aus der Fünten, causing some Jews to suspect him of collaboration. Susskind and his family were deported to Westerbork in 1943. In September 1944 they were sent to Theresienstadt and then to Auschwitz, where his wife and daughter were killed. Susskind also perished, probably during the death march from Auschwitz in January 1945. Includes testimonies by people who worked with him in rescue activities.

Abstract: Examines the role of the Eretz Israel Office in Budapest, and its head, Moshe Krausz, in rescue work in 1943. Notes that there were ca. 15,000 Jewish refugees in Hungary at the time, most of them from Slovakia. Krausz received funds from the Jewish Agency's Vaad ha-Hatzalah in Constantinople, but opinions differed on how these should be allocated to the various Zionist groups. The Vaad ha-Hatzalah then dictated the allocation of funds, as well as the provision of emigration certificates. Describes in detail the establishment of the Vaad ha-Hatzalah in Budapest in late 1943, and the arguments among the various factions involved. There was also conflict between this group and the Eretz Israel Office. Krausz made arrangements for many Jews to emigrate to Palestine, but he was sharply criticized, e.g. for not helping Slovakian Jews enough.
