Abstract:
Examines the implementation of the Vichy anti-Jewish legislation in the federation of French West Africa (founded in 1904), which during World War II included about 112 Jews. The federation comprised the territories of Senegal, the Ivory Coast, French Guinea, French Sudan (now Mali), Niger, Dahomey (now Benin), Mauritania, and the mandate of Togo. Concludes that the authorities' implementation of the anti-Jewish legislation to the letter, even though the federation was far removed from combat zones and had not been controlled by German authorities, highlights antisemitic features of the French authorities in the colonies.
