Abstract: Discusses the anti-Jewish polemics of Archbishop Agobard of Lyon and his successor Amulo, in the 820s and 840s respectively, in the context of their attempts to create a unified Christian society. Their opposition to social contacts between Christians and Jews was part of their struggle to free ecclesiastical authority from the secular powers. Draws parallels between the Lyon archbishops' negative attitudes toward the Jews and other "heresies", as part of their struggle for judicial unification of the Carolingian Empire, and attempts in the 12th century to submit French society to the Church and create a "society of persecution". Social ambitions of this kind lumped the Jews together with infidels, lepers, heretics, and others who were to be excluded in order to create an ideal society.
