Abstract: Many of the Jewish storylines over this past year have been built around themes related to Donald Trump’s persona and policies. This chapter is designed to explore the major issues that impacted American Jewish life over the course of this past year and examines the Trump Presidency, recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s Capital, the Gaza Crisis, Iran Deal, Gun Violence, the Immigration Debate and the Jewish Response, the Kotel Controversy and the Nation-State Law, antisemitism and anti-Israel activism, Hurricane Harvey, Jewish Political Activism, National Jewish Gatherings, the Me Too Movement and its Implications for American Jews, Supreme Court Cases, and Judaism’s Religious Movements. Events on the political scene confirmed growing divisions among Jews over how to position themselves as part of American society and how to engage with Israel.

Abstract: President Trump took a number of steps large numbers of Jews approved of, notably recognizing Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and moving the US embassy there and cancelling the Iran nuclear deal, but disapproval of his domestic policies and demeanor angered many Jews, most of whom did not vote for him. US-Israel government relations improved, but tensions escalated between American Jewish leaders and the Israeli government as Prime Minister Netanyahu reneged on an agreement to create an egalitarian prayer space at the Western Wall and the Knesset adopted policies some Jews perceived as weakening Israel’s democratic and pluralistic tradition. American Jews staunchly supported Israel’s response to Hamas terror and Iranian threats from Syria, and joined Israel in fighting the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement. Many American Jews remained frustrated, however, with the stagnation of the peace process and concerned by signs the Democratic Party is becoming more critical of Israel.

Abstract: Antisemitism is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted of all forms of inter-group hatred. Prejudice and bigotry against Jews have many aspects, combining religious intolerance, economic stereotypes, suspicions of disloyalty, and other factors. But while antisemitism is a persistent and enduring societal blight, it is not static and immutable. Antisemitic beliefs do change over time and the level and nature of prejudicial attitudes and anti-Jewish behaviors do wax and wane. As a complex and dynamic societal feature, the state of antisemitism needs to be closely examined and its contemporary manifestations carefully investigated and assessed.

Abstract: This chapter examines the size, geographic distribution, and selected characteristics of the Jewish population of the US. Section 6.1 addresses the procedures employed to estimate the Jewish population of more than 900 local Jewish communities and parts thereof. Section 6.2 presents the major changes in local Jewish population estimates since last year’s Year Book. Section 6.3 presents a brief migration history of American Jews and examines population estimates for the country as a whole, each state, the four US Census Regions, the nine US Census Divisions, the 21 largest US Metropolitan Statistical Areas (MSAs), the 21 largest Combined Statistical Areas (CSAs), and the 52 Jewish Federation service areas with 20,000 or more Jews. Section 6.4 examines changes in the size and geographic distribution of the Jewish population at national, state, and regional scales from 1980 to 2018. Section 6.5 presents a description of local Jewish community studies completed in the past year (Indianapolis, St. Petersburg). Section 6.6 presents comparisons of Jewish communities on antisemitism. Section 6.7 presents an atlas of local American Jewish communities, including a national map of Jews by county and 14 regional and state maps of Jewish communities.

Abstract: At the beginning of 2018, the world’s Jewish population was estimated at 14,606,100—an increase of 98,400 (0.68%) over the 2017 revised estimate. As the world’s total population increased by 1.13% in 2017, world Jewry increased at about 60% of the general population growth rate. Jewish population was highly concentrated in two countries, Israel (45% of the world total) and the US (39% of the world total), 9% lived in Europe, 3% in other North America and Latin America, and 2% in other continents. A steady demographic increase in Israel was matched by stagnation or decline elsewhere, which was generated by low birth rates, frequent intermarriage, aging, and emigration. Most Jews are increasingly found in just a few more developed and democratic countries, with tens of communities now below a sufficient critical mass needed to sustain community institutions. This chapter carefully reviews different approaches to Jewish population definitions, the different sources available, and their highly variable quality and reliability. The critically important Jewish-Arab population balance in Israel and Palestine is analyzed. Vignettes on the largest Jewish populations— Israel, the United States, France, Canada, the United Kingdom, Argentina, Russia, Germany, Australia, Brazil, South Africa, Ukraine, and Mexico —are also provided.

Abstract: The Canadian Jewish population has seen only modest growth in the past 20 years, following a more significant increase between 1981 and 1991. The latter decade coincided with the beginning of significant immigration by Jews from the Former Soviet Union. Jews reside in every region of Canada including the Northern Territories, although they are concentrated heavily in the major urban centers. The metropolitan area of Toronto is home to 188,710 Jews and includes about half (48.2%) of Canada’s Jewish population. The Montreal community numbers 90,780 Jews. The median age of Canadian Jews is slightly older than the national average but much older than ethnic groups with large numbers of more recent immigrants. The Canadian Jewish population has a slightly larger proportion of children (age 0–14) than the total population (18.2% and 17.0% respectively) and a significantly larger proportion of persons over age 65 than the overall Canadian population (16.9% and 13.9% respectively). There are 66,280 elderly Jews 65+ years of age residing in Canada. A total of 10,395 Jewish elderly live below the poverty line. About one in six seniors (15.7%) is poor. Female seniors are almost twice as likely as males to fall below the poverty line (19.3% and 11.6% respectively).
