Abstract:
Discusses various aspects of the political situation in Hungary at the time, focusing on the issue of nationalism. Notes that Hungary allied itself with Germany in an effort to retrieve territory lost after World War I. In addition, there was a fear of communism, which was associated with the Jews. The Horthy regime espoused a traditional "gentleman's" antisemitism, leading Hungarian Jews to feel sure they would not suffer the fate of their brothers in Nazi-occupied countries, in spite of Hungarian anti-Jewish legislation. Discusses, also, the failure of the Churches to protest against the deportations, the lack of opposition amongst the proletariat, and the Arrow Cross's collaboration with the Nazis.
