Abstract:
Analyzes the presence of Conversos, most of them Portuguese, among the colonizers of Colombia, and the reaction of the Spanish authorities to this "invasion". States that the administrative and religious authorities (e.g. president-governor Venero de Leyva, 1563-73) were alarmed by the high percentage of Conversos among the immigrants, and called repeatedly for the introduction of the Inquisition (1558), immigration restrictions, and expulsion of unwanted "foreigners". Political and economic competition led to accusations of "Jewish origins" in order to discredit a rival (e.g. Gonzalo Jiménez de Quesada, founder of the city of Bogotá).
