Abstract:
The Catholic and Protestant Churches supported the Vichy regime in the hope that all religious activities would be allowed to continue. The attitude of Cardinal Pierre-Marie Gerlier was ambivalent: he deplored the treatment of Jewish inmates at internment camps, but was a staunch supporter of Pétain. In 1940-41 there were many individuals among the Catholic and Protestant clergy who protested against the anti-Jewish statutes; e.g. Pastor Marc Boegner openly defended the Jews. The Catholic Abbé Alexandre Glasberg, originally from a Ukrainian Jewish family, helped many Jews, supplying them with false papers and hiding places; he acted with the consent of Gerlier. After deportations began in spring 1942, there was greater participation in rescue work: many monasteries and convents hid Jews, the organization Amitié Chrétienne helped Jews escape to other countries, and Gerlier was involved in saving 84 Jewish children from deportation. Some priests and nuns were arrested for their rescue work and some perished in Nazi camps.
