Abstract:
Discusses, first, reactions in Britain and in other English-speaking countries to the Damascus, Mortara, and Dreyfus Affairs, to Russian pogroms in 1881-82 and 1905, and to antisemitism after World War I and during the Nazi era. The roster of non-Jews, including political and religious leaders and intellectuals, who took part in rallies, petitions, etc. against antisemitism contains hundreds of names. Then, presents a typology of philosemitism consisting of four categories: Liberal (which considers religion a private matter); Protestant (which was affected by the Bible and identification either with the ancient Israelites or Jewish suffering); Gentile Zionist; and Elitist/Conservative (which stresses Jewish contributions to society). Concludes that, despite the reality and force of antisemitism, there is another, much less well-known, side of the coin in the modern English-speaking world, one "perhaps fully as large and as important as hostility toward the Jews".
