Abstract: Discusses Schnitzler's novel "Der Weg ins Freie" (1908), claiming that, contrary to appearance, its main topics are the "Jewish question" and antisemitism, expressed in the dialogues between various characters in the novel. Traces the different types of Jews in fin-de-siecle Vienna and in the novel, e.g. the intellectual writer, conscious of the antisemitism around him, including his own self-hatred; the Zionist, who despises any compromise; the assimilated Jew, who makes efforts to be accepted by the aristocracy. Examines the attitudes of Jews toward other Jews and non-Jews, and those of non-Jews toward Jews. Notes the collective ideology of "difference" based on racial origin as depicted in this novel about the late 19th century as a dangerous potential of social catastrophe, which was then not yet foreseeable.
Note: Reprinted in the second edition, 2019.
