Abstract:
A psychological analysis of the Polish writer Tadeusz Borowski, mainly based on his collection of short stories "This Way for the Gas, Ladies and Gentlemen", a fictionalized account of his experiences as a prisoner in Auschwitz (1943-45). Contends that Borowski's tendency toward self-destruction was alleviated by the sense of power he experienced over the Jewish prisoners, and thus he felt disgust for the Jews. Yet, due to his identification with them as a fellow victim, he also played the role of the noble savior, as his love for Maria (who was probably of Jewish origin) attests. However, the scorn failed to integrate Borowski's self, and he committed suicide in 1951. Rosenman analyzes his own hateful reaction to Borowski's work.
