Abstract:
A short biography of the Nazi physician Irmfried Eberl. An ill-trained medical student, he was appointed head of the Brandenburg euthanasia center in 1939, and of the similar Bernburg center in 1940. Eberl's diaries show that most of those killed at these centers during that time were Jews. In April 1942 Eberl was assigned the commission of preparing Treblinka for the mass murder of Jews. He was the commander of the death camp in July-August 1942, during which time ca. 280,000 Jews were gassed in Treblinka. In January 1948 Eberl was arrested as a war criminal and committed suicide in prison.
