Abstract:
Pp. 4-10 reproduce six letters, heretofore unpublished, relating to action taken by Louis Marshall, president of the American Jewish Committee, in attempting to alleviate the plight of the persecuted Jews in Hungary. The letters are addressed from Marshall to the U.S. Secretary of State, from the Department of State to the U.S. Commissioner in Budapest and to Louis Marshall, and from Marshall to William Loew (brother of the Chief Rabbi of Szeged, Immanuel Loew, who had been arrested in Hungary on charges of treason). The Hungarian government claimed it could not control the army bands of terrorists, but the Western powers made clear to the government that it would have to impose its authority. The organized terror ceased at the beginning of 1921.
