Abstract:
Deals with Switzerland's behavior toward the Jews during World War II, defining it as the most important topic of discussion in Switzerland in 1997. Among the many criticisms were the traffic with Nazi Germany, the reception of gold which the Nazis had taken by force from the victims, the turning back of thousands of refugees who tried to cross the Swiss border, passive collaboration with the Nazis by allowing transport of prisoners through Swiss territories, holding stolen Jewish property at Swiss banks, and the Swiss economy's profiting from the war. Among the reactions to these revelations, mentions the effort to cope with the past made by the parliament, establishment of historians' commissions, and creation of funds for aid by banks on the one hand and the rise of crude antisemitism on the other. Examines the role of the Protestant Church in Switzerland during the Nazi period, tracing the errors made, and stresses the need for reparations and a change in theological orientation.
