Abstract:
Refers to Saul Friedlaender's article in "L'Allemagne nazie et le genocide juif" (1985), and his distinction between the "limited level" of debate (whether Nazi policy was functionalist or intentionalist) and the "global" interpretation of Nazi antisemitism as specifically German, fascist, or totalitarian. Supports Friedlaender's assertion that the Nazis' crime was that they took it upon themselves "to decide who may or may not inhabit this planet, " and warns against Martin Broszat's attempt to historicize Nazism. As well as the historians' "paralysis" before the monstrosity of the Holocaust, and the failure and crisis of the Western world, there is "paralysis" of the writer of fiction. Agrees with Paul Ricoeur's assertion in "Temps et recit" (1985) that fiction on the Holocaust is as important as historical writing. Objective comparisons to similar events do not banalize the Holocaust; on the contrary, they underline its uniqueness.
