Abstract:
During the liquidation of the Białystok ghetto, the Gestapo ordered the Judenrat to turn over 1,200 children, allegedly for transfer to Palestine as part of an exchange plan in which the British were ready to rescue Jewish children from the Nazi-occupied territories. The 1,200 children, accompanied by twenty adults, were transferred to Theresienstadt on 21 or 22 August 1943 and secluded in the "Kreta" compound until 5 October 1943, when they were transferred to Auschwitz and exterminated on arrival. Follows the German approach to the negotiations as reflected in the documents of the German Foreign Office. Asserts that the Nazis had no intention to release the children; they were just used by the Nazis in their propaganda campaign against the British, which was intended to demonstrate that Great Britain did not really want to rescue Jews, as well as to turn the Arabs in Palestine against the British.
