Abstract:
Argues that historians' use of the terms "repression" and "philo-Semitism" fail to clarify the complex situation of non-perpetrator Germans. Notes how the postwar language of West Germans in regard to the "Jewish question" discloses their prejudice. The resort to stereotypes suggests that the distinction some Germans attempt to make between (antisemitic) beliefs that are considered legitimate and (genocidal) acts that are considered unjust is an attempt to dissociate from Nazi crimes.
