Abstract:
Analyzes the works of Valentin Pikul', adherent of the nationalist Russian Party, who in the early 1970s presented Jews in a positive light, but in 1978-79 published two works which portrayed the Jews as traitors. States that his purpose was to gain favor in the eyes of the establishment and that antisemitism is not an integral part of the Party's ideology. Pikul' later retracted and presented Jews positively in stories published in 1985. Katayev, a prize-winning author and secretary of the Writers' Association, has used antisemitism to express anti-Soviet views, showing Jews to be responsible for all the ills of the Revolution and its aftermath. In contrast, the works of Semyonov (born Landers), a popular Jewish writer, present a positive view of the Jews. He wishes to preserve the "Soviet Empire" and contends that the Nazi Empire fell because of its antisemitism. He attacks the Russian Party for undermining the Soviet Empire.
