Abstract: In the 19th century, and especially at the turn of the 20th century, there were continuing attempts to prove that the Jews constitute a race, and that there is a racial continuity between the ancient and contemporary Jews. As a tool of demonstration, visual images of Jews were used, from ancient bas-reliefs to modern photographs, as if the "visual similarity" of ancient and modern Jews might confirm their national unity. The argument of a Jewish race was used by both Jewish nationalists and antisemites - e.g. Andree, Chamberlain, Sombart, Galton - who argued that Jews cannot integrate in European society.
