Abstract:
Based on interviews with Jews who survived the Shoah in hiding in France as children, contends that the contribution of the Catholic Church to their rescue has been exaggerated. Only between 8-13% of all children hidden in France found shelter in monasteries, and between 4-8% in other Catholic institutions. These children did not receive a better education than children hidden in state, Jewish, or Protestant children's homes, but had to work harder in manual jobs than all other hidden children, except those who found shelter on farms. Over 80% of the children living in monasteries received bad treatement, encountering not only antisemitism, but also sexual abuse. During and after the war, the Catholic Church forced Jewish children to convert and then used their baptism as a reason for not returning the children to their families after the war.
