Abstract: Describes the personality and activities of Franz Kahn (1895-1944), head of the Zionist Organization in Czechoslovakia, from the German occupation in March 1939 until his deportation from Theresienstadt to Auschwitz. From the beginning, Kahn was opposed to working in agreement with the Gestapo. He disagreed with Jakob Edelstein who believed that establishing a "Jewish city" in Theresienstadt and convincing the Germans of the efficacy of Jewish labor would save the Jews. But he went along with Edelstein's proposals because there was no better alternative. He wished to encourage Jews to save themselves in whatever way was possible, but the Hehalutz movement labelled anyone who did not go along with the Theresienstadt plan as a traitor to the "halutz" cause. Kahn and his wife were interned in Theresienstadt in January 1943. He refused a role in the ghetto leadership on principle, and was put in charge of organizing lectures. In October 1944 he and his wife were deported to Auschwitz and immediately gassed.
