Abstract:
Recounts episodes of hostility against Jews in the Reggio Emilia region in 1797, under Napoleonic rule. The French invasion of Italy (1796) resulted in the enactment of a liberal constitution known as the "Constituzione Cispadana", which promulgated the emancipation of the Jews. The Christian world and the aristocracy reacted against these reforms. In Correggio, a Jew, Benedetto Finzi, was accused of inducing a Christian child to steal wheat from a mill. The authorities rejected the accusation, arousing a suspicion amongst the populace of their being bribed by the Jews. Afterwards, other Jews were accused of offending Christians during prayers and at processions. The tensions led to violence, until the intervention of the French army restored public order.
