Abstract: Irving Abella and Harold Troper, in their "None Is Too Many" (1982), accused the Canadian Churches of silence in regard to the persecution of the Jews during the Nazi period. Contends that, in fact, the attitude of the United Church was more complex. While some Germanophile, Völkisch ideas were expressed in the Church journal "New Outlook", the editorial line condemned Nazi antisemitic policies. Several activists called for the admission of Jewish refugees to Canada, and in 1937 Church institutions and some local presbyteries began to take action on this issue. However, the Church, as a body, failed to react to the horrors of the Holocaust because they could not believe the reports.

Abstract: Surveys the response of the Anglican Church in Canada to Nazism as seen in the Church press, decisions of general and local synods, and public statements by Church leaders. The Anglican Church maintained an active mission to the Jews throughout this period, reflecting the traditional view that the solution to antisemitism was conversion. The Church leadership was alive to the dangers of Nazism and local fascist parties, protesting that their antisemitism was un-British and un-Christian. The General Synod of 1934 condemned German anti-Jewish measures and efforts were made to assist refugees and to alter the government's restrictive immigration policies. Reports of the death camps appeared in the Church press in 1942-43, leading to widespread protests. Concludes that while sympathy for the Jewish plight may not have been universally felt among Anglicans, the picture of a few isolated individual protesters presented in Abella's and Troper's study "None Is Too Many" (1982) is too extreme.
