Abstract: Spurred by interracial tensions and rising antisemitism, Blacks attacked and looted Jewish shops on Hastings Street in Detroit on 20 June 1943. Describes surveys conducted by sociologist Donald C. Marsh and associates during the winter of 1942-43 on Black-Jewish customer-merchant attitudes, and a follow-up survey in fall 1944 to measure the effects of the riot. The results showed that "black antagonisms stemmed from socioeconomic factors rather than antisemitism per se".
