Abstract:
Summarizes Fackenheim's approach to the Holocaust. To find "meaning" in the Holocaust will forever be impossible, but authentic response is the imperative for Orthodox and secular Jews, as well as Christians. Like at Sinai, the hidden meaning of the Holocaust calls upon mankind to listen and respond. Christians are admonished to stop seeking the end of the Jews and Jews are enjoined to revere and remember the victims, to uphold Jewish life, and to defend Israel's right to exist. Only the State of Israel can defend Jews against the threats to their existence. Concludes, though, that there is a fundamental difficulty in Fackenheim's perhaps outdated position because in our time there is a plurality of responses, which may even conflict with one another.
